Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna

The Arenal volcano has been active since 1968 with more or less regular eruptions of lava and ash providing fiery demonstrations that draw curious onlookers from all parts of the world. The Arenal's constant activity has covered its two lower craters on the western, rocky slope. Viewed from north or south its two remaining craters appear as twin peaks belching ash and rock.

Volcano Arenal at night - one of Costa Ricas main attractionsStaying in the town of La Fortuna is a great way to move around in the area; this small town has something for everyone. It is a pleasant and clean place that has developed a tourist infrastructure that satisfies the demands of most travelers. La Fortuna is the only town with a bank and a gasoline station near the volcano.

The Arenal volcano rises up out of the nearby countryside and looks upon the village and its people. You may choose if you want to take a bath in the hot springs of the Tabacon river, experience a canopy tour, walk around and watch the abundance of birds, tour to the Caño Negro Wildlife refuge, take a floating safari on the Peñas Blancas river, go rafting, horseback riding, visit a butterfly farm or even walking on hanging bridges. Not too far from the town, the waterfall of La Fortuna is another of its attractions. You can observe its 246 feet fall as you arrive on horse or foot.
